A Walk Down Memory Lane
After retiring from work, I decided I wanted to get out of the house. I had received letters from AARP about volunteering in different places. Reading with school children struck my attention. I love working with children. So I called Generations Incorporated. I took training classes and went to meetings. I decided to go to the Russell school not far from my home. I was so welcome at the school. I have lovely memories there. After some years we were told we wouldn’t be there anymore. I have good memories, the staff, my Generations Incorporated peers and most of all the children. I will always remember the children. Then I had to make a decision where I was going. I wanted to be near my home and was suggested to check out Emerson Elementary School in Roxbury. I had always gone by that school and enjoyed seeing the children playing. It so reminded me of the neighborhood school where my own children used to go and I decided it would be a great fit. I was welcomed by everyone. I’ve enjoyed my time at the Emerson immensely working with wonderful people that felt like one big family. I learned so much. It has been years of such joy, sharing, and togetherness from all the staff and my peers of Generations Incorporated. I can’t say enough about the children. I am sad to see these educational and happy times come to an end. The school will close this year. This old building holds so many memories. I will miss all of the beautiful children and the staff of the Emerson. I wish peace and love to everyone. May all the children go onto higher learning and follow their dreams and reach for the stars. My happy moments of a walk down memory lane.
Peace and love,
Ida Goodman, Experience Corps Member at Emerson Elementary School
