OVERVIEW - TRAINING
Generations Incorporated’s AmeriCorps program begins the first
week in September with a month long orientation where members will
learn about our communities, partnerships, programs, and volunteers.
During orientation, AmeriCorps members will be placed at a school
and/or after-school site to coordinate all Generations Incorporated
programming and support a team of Experience Corps Volunteers for
the length of the school year. Members serve at their placement
site(s) Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, AmeriCorps members
come together as a team at our office downtown for member development,
which includes training, team building, civic engagement, and professional
development. Fridays also provide members with an opportunity to
seek and give support to fellow members in their various service
roles and experiences.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
This is the 15th year that our intergenerational programs have improved
the lives of both young and old in Boston. From modest beginnings,
our programs have grown dramatically. During the 2005-06 school
year, our AmeriCorps and Experience Corps volunteers provided nearly
75,000 hours of literacy and mentoring assistance to nearly 3,400
children. AmeriCorps members serve a critical role in bringing youth
and older adults together. At each school or after-school site,
they support a group of older adult volunteers who provide literacy
tutoring and mentor students. As a result of their service, members
strengthen ties between families and schools; schools and communities;
and inspire leadership in community residents. Our programs include:
• AmeriCorps members coordinate and participate in literacy
programs for children in K-5th grades who are reading below grade
level or who need individual attention in the classroom.
• AmeriCorps members coordinate and participate in mentoring
programs for children in 4th and 5th grades who need a positive
role model in their lives.
• AmeriCorps members plan and implement service activities
that meet the needs of our target communities. In the past years,
these events have varied from painting murals, creating community
gardens, student art and talent shows, book give aways, and family
outreach events.
AmeriCorps members are the representatives of Generations Incorporated
in our three communities. Members’ responsibilities include
scheduling, communication with all school staff, planning family
outreach events, completion of site paperwork, and facilitating
team meetings. The day to day support of volunteers, which includes
listening, problem solving, and coaching in the literacy model,
is the most important aspect of our service positions. AmeriCorps
members are key to establishing relationships that will continue
to grow over time.
