Experience Corps

What is Experience Corps?

Experience Corps is an award-winning national program that engages people over 55 in meeting their communities’ greatest challenges. Today, 2,000 Experience Corps members in 22 cities tutor and mentor elementary school students struggling to learn to read.

What is Experience Corps Greater Boston?

Experience Corps Greater Boston is an innovative intergenerational literacy program hosted by Generations Incorporated that engages older adults (ages 55+) as mentors and tutors in elementary schools and after-school programs in Boston and Revere.

What do Experience Corps Members do?

Trained Experience Corps members work in teams at local schools and after-school programs where they are paired with children who are reading below grade level. Most Experience Corps members meet with a child twice a week in one-on-one tutoring sessions.

What kind of impact do Experience Corps members make?

Our programs have significant impact on the students we serve.  Students in our program make 60% more progress on critical literacy skills than non-participating children.

How does the program benefit Experience Corps Members?

Older adults who serve with us benefit from expanded social networks, a renewed sense of purpose and belonging and, according to a recent study by Johns Hopkins, they realize meaningful improvements in their own mental and physical health. Experience Corps members across the country report better overall health because of their volunteer service:  they are more active, less isolated, feel stronger, are less depressed, and feel that they are making an important contribution to their community.

Experience Corps members who serve a minimum of 10 hours per week are eligible to receive a stipend. Member stipends are provided through the generous support of AmeriCorps, Commonwealth Corps, and private funders.

As an Experience Corps member, you will…

  • help children improve their literacy skills
  • have monthly training opportunities
  • join a larger network of active adults who are involved in their community
  • commit to serve as little as one hour or as much as 15 hours a week
  • see measurable progress while directly improving a child’s reading skills and self esteem
